I feel pretty confident that, between Social Security and 401k and other income sources, we’ll be ok for retirement. But that’s based on my limited comprehension of what it means to replace a paycheck with savings. And I like the security of a regular paycheck. So maybe I keep working even in retirement – at least in a limited capacity.
Mental health may be an even bigger benefit of the side hustle. I’ve seen many folks hit retirement only to find themselves lost and bored. Don’t find yourself at 67 wondering “ok, now what am I gonna do?”
Jobs in retirement shouldn’t have to pay ALL the bills. The entertainment factor can, for the first time, rank over financial needs. Plus whatever the fun thing is can provide a little structure to our leisurely lives. Make some money, have some fun, have a reason to set the alarm clock a few days a week. Win-win.
The gig economy offers many ways to side hustle. Like driving around? Maybe deliver food via Uber.com or Postmates. Have some special skills like gardening or woodwork? I bet you can find a few customers via TaskRabbit. Feeling crafty? There’s always Etsy and eBay. If you need inspiration try spelunking the Side Hustle Stack for ideas:
Me? I love filmmaking. So I’m thinking about doing wedding videography as my side hustle. To be clear, since money isn’t the driving factor, I’m thinking of doing a very specific style that’s basically a documentary of the event. I’m thinking this will scratch my creative itch, get me hanging out with new people, and provide a little extra cash. If that goes bust maybe I’ll give public speaking a try.
Regardless of your side hustle, I think it’s a fun thing to ponder as you approach retirement. What cool, fun thing do you want to do once you’re done working for just a paycheck?
